England’s premier legal directory, Chambers, awarded Hughes Hubbard its 2008 Award for Excellence in International Arbitration. Chambers describes Hughes Hubbard as "one of the heavyweights" and ranks Hughes Hubbard among the top American firms in international arbitration, noting our "impressive number of 'top-flight lawyers handling top-flight cases.'" Chambers also called the Firm "a definite leader in the field."
A survey published in the journal International Commercial Litigation ranks Hughes Hubbard first among all U.S. firms in the number of arbitrations handled, and second among all firms worldwide in the number of industries covered by its arbitration practice.

Our arbitration and ADR specialists often become involved with our clients well before a dispute has arisen, working with our transactional lawyers to draft appropriate arbitration or mediation clauses for contracts. Once a dispute arises, Hughes Hubbard lawyers act as advocates and as arbitrators in arbitration and other dispute resolution proceedings in the United States and throughout the world, and under the rules of most of the leading institutions, including the American Arbitration Association, the International Chamber of Commerce, the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution, the LCIA, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, the Vienna Arbitral Centre and the Netherlands Arbitration Institute, as well as in non-administered arbitrations under the UNCITRAL and CPR Rules. Our lawyers participate actively in the activities of many of those institutions. For example:

John Townsend, Co-Chair of our Arbitration and ADR Group, is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Arbitration Association. He was appointed by President Bush as one of the U.S. members of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators and was the Chair of the Mediation Committee of the International Bar Association. He is ranked in Chambers' top tier and served on the committees that drafted and later revised the CPR Rules for Non-Administered Arbitration of Business Disputes and the CPR Rules for Non-Administered Arbitration of International Disputes.
José Rosell, Co-Chair of our Arbitration and ADR Group and located in our Paris office, is a member of the ICC Latin American Arbitration Group and serves as chairman or member of several ICC working groups on arbitration issues. He is ranked among the most recommended arbitration practitioners by the leading international directories. He has served on the drafting group of the ICC Dispute Board Rules.
Axel Baum, also in our Paris office, has served as the United States Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration. He is included among the foremost arbitrators in a wide range of Guidebooks, and was named "Arbitrator of the Year 2005" by the leading French journal.
Steven Hammond, one of our New York partners, is a former President of the Union Internationale des Avocats and has been active in the UIA’s arbitration work.
William Bisset, one of our Los Angeles partners, was a principal draftsman of the Conciliation And Arbitration Rules of the Center for International Commercial Arbitration in Los Angeles.
John Fellas, of our New York office, recently authored a treatise on Transatlantic Commercial Litigation and Arbitration.
Chris Paparella, of our New York office, is a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, among other organizations. He focuses on oil and gas and energy disputes and has handled numerous international arbitrations.
