International
Clients have sought the Firm’s counsel for their most challenging and complex problems for over a century. With the globalization of world commerce, this tradition has insured that our International Practice continues to expand— both in volume and sophistication— more rapidly than any other segment of the Firm’s activities.
Hughes Hubbard’s international dispute resolution practice has consistently been recognized as among the world’s best. Britain’s Chambers’ 2000-2001 edition of The World’s Leading Lawyers, for example, has declared that the Firm’s “reputation for excellence is undiminished.” When the American Lawyer identified 17 firms in the world as the international “Arbitration Elite,” Hughes Hubbard was the only U.S. firm with fewer than 500 lawyers to appear on that list. The ability of our litigators to combine world-class service with streamlined and efficient staffing has led others, like the International Financial Law Review’s Global 1000, to describe the Firm as “an underrated gem.” Our litigation partners are frequently singled out for international recognition in such publications as International Commercial Litigation’s Guide to Leading International Business Law Firms, Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Litigation Lawyers and Guide to the World’s Leading Experts in Commercial Arbitration, and Law Business Research’s An International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitrators. Chambers’ 2000-2001 edition of The World’s Leading Lawyers named Hughes Hubbard among the top five East Coast law firms for international arbitration, with partners ranked among the top ten individuals on the East Coast and in France, respectively. Euromoney’s The Best of the Best 2000 listed the co-chair of the Firm’s International Practice Group as one of the world’s 20 most respected international litigation practitioners.
Our international corporate practice is likewise recognized around the globe. Our corporate partners have been cited in a variety of international guides, including The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers, and Euromoney’s Guide to the World’s Leading Banking Lawyers. In every variety of international corporate lawyering — from cross-border corporate transactions, to international joint ventures, to facilitating access to the world’s capital markets — Hughes Hubbard lawyers have been active participants in the globalization of the world’s economy. Our country-specific expertise can be found in our Pacific Basin and Latin America Practice Groups, our Paris office, and the dozens of Hughes Hubbard lawyers whose assignments involve transactions in most other parts of the world.
The Firm’s specialty practices have brought additional depth to our international practice. From its base in the Washington office, our international trade practice has provided foreign governments and U.S. and foreign companies with advice and representation on customs, trade regulation, export and commercial treaty (NAFTA, WTO) matters. Our antitrust practice, one of our oldest specialty practices, has seen rapid growth in counseling and defending foreign enterprises on matters involving the application of the Sherman and Hart-Scott-Rodino Acts to their activities in this country. The London-based Global Competition Review has noted both our “strong international antitrust practice” and our “reputation for cutting-edge work.” Hughes Hubbard’s Intellectual Property and Technology Group, supplemented with the Téchnologies Practice Group in our Paris office, advises U.S. and international clients in all facets of trademark, copyright, patent and technology law, as well as licensing, distribution and franchising matters, and combines a level of expertise in these areas, usually found only in boutique firms, with the international litigation and corporate support of a full-service firm.
Hughes Hubbard lawyers routinely handle matters affecting every continent, and increasingly coordinate or advise on matters that involve multiple jurisdictions. Non-U.S. companies and governments, together with U.S. companies that consult us on a wide variety of their international operations, represent a significant majority of our clients. Lawyers from over twenty countries, who collectively speak some two dozen languages, contribute to the ongoing excellence of the Firm’s international practice. The breadth of our international practice parallels that of our practice overall, and its quality echoes a tradition of excellence which has defined our approach to lawyering since 1871.
