Real Work

Yasuo Okamoto

We provide, actually, unique opportunities very early in the game. We look at the individuals and see whether they can handle the load. But as soon as they are ready -- we don’t have the luxury of having people sort of sit around in the library and then pouring over books and cases. We want you there. We want you to experience firsthand what is going on with the client. And I think it makes you a better lawyer as soon as you understand what the client really needs. We are not in a law school environment. We’re doing real work. We’re doing real work for real people with real problems. And the sooner you realize that, I think the better lawyer you become.

Friendships

James C Fitzpatrick

It really is an extremely friendly atmosphere. We get along very well, and I consider the people that I work with and the people that I work for to be friends. And I think nothing really motivates me to work hard and to want to come up with the best work product that I possibly can than to know that I’m giving it to someone that I consider a friend and that I care about.

Quality of Life

Candace K Beinecke

We want lawyers who can grow into being advisors, and to do that, you need a range of opportunity and experience. And because of our size, we’re able to provide it to our lawyers.
Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP is a law firm with more than 30 specialized practices with offices in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Miami, Jersey City, Kansas City, Paris and Tokyo. The firm has been recognized as part of the "new elite" among "the profession’s top tier," according to a survey by The American Lawyer magazine ("The A-List", July 2011).

Our diverse practice is grouped into nine departments: Corporate, Corporate Reorganization, Employee Benefits, Financial Services, Intellectual Property and Technology, Litigation, Personal Affairs, Real Estate and Tax. The Corporate Department is further broken down into specialized practice groups, such as Mergers & Acquisitions and Capital Markets, although all lawyers in a practice group are available to work on matters in other areas.

Included among our clients are domestic and foreign corporations, financial institutions, investment banking firms, partnerships and individuals, and many clients in the public and non-profit sectors. Some of our more recent matters have included: representation of Hallmark Entertainment in made-for-TV film production litigation; representation of Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) in negotiations and test-case litigation involving cable television and on-line service uses of music; representation of Bulova, Elle magazine and Billboard in a wide array of intellectual property matters; representation of The Harford in national liability insurance coverage disputes regarding tobacco and silicone implants; representation of Bristol-Myers Squibb in antitrust issues; representation of PricewaterhouseCoopers in various corporate and litigation matters; representation of Merck & Co. in connection with joint ventures with other pharmaceutical companies; representation of Viacom in connection with the disposition of its cable business and in connection with purchases and sales of broadcast television stations; representation of MTV in splitting off its internet business, acquiring the internet music assets of VH1.com and Sonic.net, and forming a new stand-alone company; and representation of Christie’s in various corporate and litigation matters including the establishment of its e-commerce business. In addition, partners and associates are encouraged to participate in a wide range of pro bono activities as well as other outside professional activities.

Our Firm is committed to the professional growth and development of each associate. Associates in the New York office are urged to elect direct assignment to one of the Firm’s departments, but discretionary rotations between two departments are permitted during their first year. Associates in other offices typically are hired for one department. Associates can expect to work on a variety of matters that are staffed to provide a close working relationship with partners and clients. Each associate is encouraged to develop his or her individual talents with a view to taking on additional responsibilities as rapidly as possible.

Our summer program is designed to ensure that each summer associate receives a variety of projects and is exposed to as many people and aspects of the practice as possible. If time and work permit, interested summer associates have the opportunity to work in one of our other offices.

The New York office plans to hire approximately 15-20 associates in the fall of 2011 and approximately 15-20 summer associates for our 2012 summer program. Our other offices also offer summer associate programs and the number of attorneys they recruit varies by office. When recruiting lawyers, we seek those whose academic performance, energy, personality and character indicate that they possess the ability and desire to meet the challenges presented by our practice and are prepared to develop rapidly and assume responsibility at an early stage.
