Hughes Hubbard
  • Hughes Hubbard is listed among the top 20 law firms in the 2007 “A-List,” according to a survey of the nation’s elite law firms by The American Lawyer magazine (the third time the firm has made the A-List since 2004).  The firm is one of only five firms on the list with less than 500 attorneys.

  • Hughes Hubbard is ranked No. 2 among all New York firms in The American Lawyer’s 2007 Midlevel Associates Survey.
  • The firm has outstanding diversity scores.  We were No. 1 in diversity among the nation’s top 100 law firms according to the latest ranking by Multicultural Magazine.

Hughes Hubbard’s Los Angeles Office
  • Hughes Hubbard’s Los Angeles office opened in 1972, the first office of a non-California firm in Los Angeles.
  • The firm is one of only 11 law firms in Los Angeles on the “A-List.”
  • Our office combines the resources of a top-tier national law firm with the benefits of a smaller, more collegial environment.
  • We work on a variety of challenging international, national and regional matters.
  • The chairs and co-chairs of the firm’s Capital Markets, Private Equity, Corporate Reorganization, Entertainment and Native American practice groups reside in our Los Angeles office.
  • One of the Los Angeles office’s private equity deals was named a Deal of the Year by The Deal magazine.
  • We provide excellent training programs, such as Trial Advocacy and Corporate Negotiation Workshops, in addition to general hands-on experience.  Junior associates assume responsibilities as early as possible and work closely with our partners and other senior attorneys.
  • We are located in downtown Los Angeles, the business and cultural center of the city.

Practice Areas

We are a full service office and represent clients in all of the firm’s practice areas.  Significant areas include:

Corporate and Financial Services

An experienced group of partners, senior counsel and associates lead our Los Angeles transactional practice.  Their individual areas of concentration encompass securities and finance (public and private debt and equity offerings), mergers and acquisitions, private equity, joint ventures and partnerships, syndicated investments, gaming industry transactions (Chambers-rated), Native American gaming, finance and other transactions (also Chambers-rated), general corporate matters and international transactions.  Lawyers who are active in our corporate and securities practice often work closely with lawyers in other offices of the firm, both on Los Angeles-based matters and otherwise.

Litigation & Arbitration

Litigation is the cornerstone of our practice both in Los Angeles and throughout the firm.  Our practice encompasses the full range of business litigation, including antitrust and trade, consumer class actions, director and officer liability, employment, entertainment, intellectual property and technology, international transactions, professional liability, real property, receiverships and securities.  Lawyers in our Los Angeles office represent defendants as well as claimants throughout the world and regularly work closely with lawyers in our New York, Washington, Miami, New Jersey, Tokyo and Paris offices.

International arbitration has always been a specialty of our Los Angeles office.  On a firm-wide basis, a comprehensive survey published by International Commercial Litigation magazine ranked Hughes Hubbard first among all American law firms in the number of international arbitrations handled, the number of separate industries involved and the number of matters that went to evidentiary hearings.  Disputes we have handled in Los Angeles in arbitration and arbitration-related litigation have ranged from mergers and acquisitions tainted by Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations to executive employment to joint ventures to engineering/construction.

Real Estate

The Real Estate Practice Group has extensive experience in a variety of sophisticated domestic and international real estate transactions.  Members of the Real Estate Practice Group have particular expertise in a number of “niche” areas, including the development and financing of hotel/casino projects, shopping centers and projects on Native American tribal lands.  Having gained experience and expertise on “both sides of the table” by representing buyers and sellers, landlords and tenants, lenders and borrowers, developers and investors, our real estate practitioners understand the fundamentals and the intricacies of every type of real estate-related transaction.

Bankruptcy, Reorganization & Creditors’ Rights

The Los Angeles office has a broad bankruptcy, insolvency, corporate reorganization and debtor-creditor practice.  Our lawyers regularly represent secured and unsecured creditors, creditors’ committees, chapter 11 debtors, landlords and buyers of assets from troubled companies.  We handle bankruptcy and receivership cases, out-of-court workouts and restructurings, insurance company insolvencies, foreclosures and creditors’ rights litigation at trial and on appeal.

Entertainment & Media

The Los Angeles office has extensive experience in matters for clients in the film, television, music and publishing industries. Our clients are producers and production companies, major studios and independents, entertainment law firms, record companies, publishers and packagers. We also represent theme park, gaming and hotel operators.  Our representation of entertainment and media industry clients encompasses both litigation and corporate matters, including joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, merchandising and licensing.

Summer Associate Program

Summer associates in Los Angeles have the opportunity to work side by side with nationally and internationally recognized attorneys in areas such as complex litigation, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions and bankruptcy.  In recent years, summer associates have assisted in drafting summary judgment briefs, attended trials and court hearings in state, federal and bankruptcy courts, participated in drafting and negotiating sessions for financing and M&A transactions, participated in numerous closings, worked directly with clients and researched novel issues of law.

Our summer associates also take part in broader firm activities such as the firm’s Trial Advocacy and Corporate Negotiation Workshops in New York.

We offer ample opportunities for summer associates to get to know our attorneys and become familiar with our office environment.  In addition to work assignments, we host a variety of social activities during the summer.  Last summer’s events included a weekend trip to a client-owned and operated casino, a Dodger game in a luxury box, wine tastings, a cooking class, concerts, dinners at partners’ homes, and other informal events.
