Practice Areas

We represent clients in the firm’s traditional practices but also have substantive regulatory specialties found in sophisticated Washington, D.C. practices.  Significant areas include:

Litigation and Arbitration
We represent clients in high-stakes, complex litigation and arbitration across the United States and around the world.  We handle cases, including class actions and multidistrict and multijurisdictional matters, at the trial and appellate levels in federal and state courts, and before federal agencies.  Our wide-ranging litigation and arbitration expertise encompasses securities fraud class actions, shareholder litigation, accountant liability, antitrust, commercial and transactional disputes, constitutional law, administrative law and regulatory enforcement, intellectual property, product liability and toxic tort, food and drug law, and many other areas.

International Trade
We help clients with the full range of trade issues.  We have particular expertise in U.S. export controls and trade sanctions regulations, antidumping and countervailing duty proceedings, international government procurement, U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, U.S. anti-boycott laws, and Customs issues.  We represent clients at the Commerce, State, and Treasury Departments, as well as the International Trade Commission.  We also litigate appeals before domestic courts, North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) panels, and the World Trade Organization.

Securities Regulation and Enforcement
We represent clients in investigations and litigation regarding securities, commodities and compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, securities class action litigation, arbitrations, criminal proceedings, governmental inquiries and administrative proceedings by regulatory authorities.  We also advise clients regarding compliance with securities regulatory requirements, including corporate disclosure, privacy regulations, and on-line regulatory issues.

Antitrust
Our antirust practice encompasses both litigation and counseling and deals with some of the most difficult problems facing American business today.  We frequently appear in multi-defendant, industry-wide litigation, and regularly assume a leadership role in formulating defense strategy and representing the defense group in court.  Our advisory practice works closely with in-house counsel and businesspeople to evaluate such strategic activities as pricing, marketing and distribution programs, mergers, joint ventures, and licensing arrangements.  We also conduct antitrust audits, reviews, and compliance programs.

Corporate and Financial Services
Our areas of experience include mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, general corporate advice, licensing, finance, and securities offerings.  Clients include government entities such as the FDIC, SBA, HUD and VA in the disposition of assets such as loans, participations, mortgage servicing rights, securities and other interests in trusts, and special purpose vehicles.

Summer Associate Program

Summer associates in Washington have the opportunity to work side by side with nationally and internationally recognized attorneys in areas such as complex litigation, international arbitration, securities litigation and international trade.  In recent years, summer associates have assisted in drafting briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court, traveled both within and outside the United States to assist in international arbitration and litigation, prepared witnesses and attended testimony in an SEC hearing, and researched novel issues of international law.

Our summer associates also take part in broader firm activities such as the firm’s Trial Advocacy and Corporate Negotiations Workshops in New York.

We offer ample opportunities for summer associates to get to know our attorneys and become familiar with our office environment. In addition to work assignments, we host a variety of social activities during the summer.  Last summer’s events included a rooftop reception at the Hay-Adams Hotel (overlooking the White House), a sailing trip in the Chesapeake, a bike tour of the D.C. monuments, a wine tasting, a cooking class, Nationals baseball games, dinners at partners’ homes, and many other informal events.
