Aviva L. Wernick has more than 20 years of experience representing international and domestic clients in complex litigation and arbitration, including in the areas of product liability, toxic torts, general commercial litigation, intellectual property, art law, bankruptcy and officer and director liability actions. She also litigates on behalf of, and counsels, a wide range of clients on labor and employment and unfair competition matters.
Aviva’s extensive litigation experience includes, for example, successfully representing the Central Bank of Paraguay in recovering millions misappropriated from two Paraguayan banks in liquidation. Aviva defended ALSTOM, the French conglomerate, in fraud and breach of warranty actions filed in federal and state courts in Florida seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages based on alleged deficiencies in the propulsion systems installed on luxury cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Regent Seven Seas Cruise Lines; all of which settled on favorable terms. Aviva represented the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in investigations into wrongdoing on the part of officers and directors of various closed financial institutions in Florida and Puerto Rico, and related litigation.
Aviva served as client liaison and managed a multi-office team in representing Lorillard Tobacco Company as national coordinating counsel in smoking and health litigation across the country, including thousands of cases in Florida. She also acted as national coordinating counsel for Chemical Specialties Inc. in product liability litigation involving CCA-treated wood, and was part of the Hughes Hubbard team that secured the denial of several class actions involving CCA-treated wood.
Aviva is also committed to providing pro bono legal services, including representation of Holocaust survivors in seeking reparations, representation of low-income clients in seeking asylum and in housing matters, and counseling museums and non-profit organizations in licensing, copyright and employment matters.
Aviva has been with Hughes Hubbard, in New York and Miami, for over 20 years. She also worked in the litigation department of a leading law firm in Tel Aviv, Israel for two years, becoming a member of the Israeli bar.
