July 15, 2020 – Hughes Hubbard & Reed is proud to announce that Matthew Syrkin, partner and global chair of the firm’s Media, Technology and Commercial Transactions Group, was again named by Variety to its Legal Impact Report list.

This annual list from Variety profiles the top attorneys in the media, technology and entertainment industries, as identified by Variety’s writers and editors. The recognition marks the fourth time in three years that Syrkin has been named to one of Variety’s prestigious lists.

In 2019, he was featured in the trade publication’s “Dealmakers Elite New York,” which profiles “the 50 people behind the major media, technology and entertainment deals over the past 12 months.” That same year, he was also named to Variety’s “Dealmakers Impact Report,” which recognizes “the key players driving the most significant deals” in the industry. He was also named to Variety’s “Dealmakers Impact Report” in 2017.

“This is another tremendous achievement for Matthew, who continues to distinguish himself as a true leader in the media and technology industry. His experience and dedication bring immense value to our firm and our clients. We are extremely fortunate to have an asset like Matthew, and I could not be happier to congratulate him on this recognition,” said Ted Mayer, chair of Hughes Hubbard.

Variety’s profile of Syrkin noted his work on several high-profile matters, including his representation of WarnerMedia in making its HBO business an over-the-top service in Latin America through the HBO Go and HBO Max offerings and his work with MGM-owned premium pay-TV EPIX on direct-to-consumer distribution partnerships on platforms, such as Roku.

Variety also noted that Syrkin predicted that the virus lockdown would further galvanize a migration to direct-to-consumer delivery. “The digital economy has been weaponized” after previously navigating around legacy media, Syrkin said.

“I am humbled to again be recognized by Variety along with some of the leading professionals in the industry,” said Syrkin. “More than ever, my team and I have succeeded by leveraging our deep understanding of the technology, business and operational aspects of the deals we do, which has been fundamental to helping our clients remain competitive and ahead of the curve in the ever-shifting digital ecosystem.”
