New York, New York, May 17, 2019 – Thomas H. Lee, Of Counsel at Hughes Hubbard, has been appointed as Special Counsel to the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Defense. Lee will take leave from the firm for one year, starting May 20, 2019, to undertake his work at the Pentagon. While assigned to the Office of the General Counsel, Lee will advise on matters involving legal policy directly in support of the Department of Defense.

“This opportunity was not an easy decision to make, but there are a number of very significant issues that the Department is working on that I would like to help in resolving,” said Lee. “The call of duty was too compelling to ignore, and I look forward to working with the General Counsel, his outstanding staff and the dedicated civilian and military members of the Defense Department.”

Lee is also the Leitner Family Professor of International Law at Fordham University School of Law. He has litigated petitions, appeals and dispositive motions in the U.S. Supreme Court, other federal courts, and New York state courts; advised U.S. and other non-Korean companies on doing business and investing in Korea; and advised foreign clients on U.S. and international law. He has expertise and experience in international commercial and investor-state arbitration, and U.S. litigation and regulation relating to cyberlaw, information privacy, and data protection. From 1991 to 1995, he was a U.S. naval cryptology officer deployed at sea in the Western Pacific and ashore in Korea and Japan and with the National Security Agency.

“We thank Tom for his service to the firm and his deep commitment to clients, colleagues, and the practice of law, and also for his service to our country,” said Ted Mayer, Chair of Hughes Hubbard. “We wish him success in the next year and look forward to welcoming him back to Hughes Hubbard.”
