Overview

Hughes Hubbard’s Tokyo Office assists Japanese clients and law firms with their U.S. and international matters, including litigation, international arbitration, anti-corruption and investigations, antitrust, cross-border transactions and financings, international trade, and import and export compliance.  Over the years, we have delivered successful results for Japanese companies in nearly every industry, including pharmaceuticals, aerospace, power, real estate and retail.

As a U.S. law firm, we help our Japanese clients with their outbound matters.  We have decades of experience representing Japanese companies across many industries, and we understand Japanese culture and business practices.  We can also communicate with our clients in Japanese.

The head of our Tokyo office, Mr. Paul Marston, has lived in Japan for more than fifteen years, and is fluent in spoken and written Japanese.  He has served as in-house counsel for two Japanese companies, and regularly assists Japanese companies in complex transactional matters and disputes.

Our Tokyo office is supported by highly credentialed attorneys from all of our offices.  This includes Japanese lawyers – including a Japanese bengoshi – and other Hughes Hubbard lawyers who have lived and worked in Japan and speak Japanese.

In representing Japanese clients, we regularly partner with their Japanese law firms.  We have close relationships with many Japanese law firms and pride ourselves on our ability to work seamlessly with them.  We also partner with Japanese law firms when a matter calls for Japanese legal advice.  We do not handle domestic Japanese matters or advise on Japanese law.
