Hughes Hubbard & Reed's art law group recently launched a blog; "HHR Art Law" will cover legal issues in the art world, including art-related developments in criminal, transactional, financing and intellectual property law.

HHR Art Law is the firm's third blog launched in recent years. The other two are the New Media, Entertainment and Technology group's digitalhhr.com and the Corporate Reorganization group's Bankruptcy Report.

HHR Art Law's first blog posts examined:

  • a recent 9th Circuit decision determining when a work of art is covered by the Visual Artists Rights Act
  • a federal case concerning the scope of the fair use defense in the context of contemporary "appropriation" art
  • proposed federal legislation intended to help facilitate the return of artwork stolen by Nazis during the Holocaust to their rightful owners or heirs by creating a uniform, federal statute of limitations in this area

Michael Salzman and Dan Weiner are executive editors of the blog. Lena Saltos is managing editor and Webster McBride and Katie Gerlach are associate editors.
