New York, New York, July 10, 2019 – Hughes Hubbard & Reed announced today that Paul S. Marston has joined the firm’s Asia Pacific practice group as counsel and head of the firm’s Tokyo office.

Over the course of his legal career, Marston has represented clients in large-scale corporate matters and disputes. He has also served as in-house counsel to a subsidiary of a large Japanese trading company, where he was responsible for managing complex litigation relating to the Macondo oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He has spent most of the past 14 years in Japan and is fully fluent in Japanese.

“Paul is a thoughtful and highly effective lawyer who will be a great asset to Hughes Hubbard,” said Seth Rothman, co-chair of the firm’s Asia Pacific practice. “His versatility and substantive legal skills enhance our ability to provide advice to our Japanese clients and law firm partners.”

“Our roots are strong in Japan, where we have decades of experience representing large companies and financial institutions,” said Ted Mayer, chair of Hughes Hubbard. “Paul’s addition is a testament to our ongoing commitment to the region.”

“I am excited for the opportunity to be the representative of a major New York-based law firm in Japan,” said Marston. “Hughes Hubbard’s longstanding reputation as one of the best litigation firms was a huge draw for me, in addition to its work on some of the most complex cases in the world.”

Marston holds a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School. He also studied at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, Japan. Prior to joining Hughes Hubbard, Marston was counsel at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP in Tokyo.
