New York, Kansas City and Paris, June 1, 2023 – Hughes Hubbard & Reed is pleased to announce that it has elected four new partners effective June 1. The new partners are Jan Dunin-Wasowicz, Brendan Franzoni, Malik Havalic, and Javad Husain.

I look forward to working with this group as they each bring their own unique skills and expertise into their new roles.”

The new partners are resident in the firm’s New York, Kansas City and Paris offices. Their practice areas include economic sanctions and export controls; anti-corruption and arbitration; international arbitration; litigation; corporate and securities; investment management; and regulatory and compliance.

Jan Dunin-Wasowicz is a member of the firm’s Sanctions, Export Controls & Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Corruption & Internal Investigations, and Arbitration practice groups.

Dunin-Wasowicz’s practice focuses on economic sanctions, trade controls and anti-corruption compliance and investigations, as well as international dispute resolution. Dunin-Wasowicz earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, and his M.A.s from Sciences Po and Université de Paris I - Panthéon-Sorbonne in France. He is also a member of the New York, District of Columbia and Paris bars. Dunin-Wasowicz’s training and experience in both common law and civil law systems makes him uniquely qualified to assist multinational companies with their most pressing transnational issues today.

Dunin-Wasowicz speaks and writes frequently on subjects related to economic sanctions, anti-corruption compliance and international law. He has lectured at Sciences Po, the Sorbonne and the European University Institute, and is an associate fellow of the Royal United Services Institute (CFCS).

Brendan Franzoni is a member of the firm’s Regulatory & Compliance and Litigation practice groups.

Franzoni’s practice focuses primarily on regulatory and complex litigation matters. In the regulatory context, he provides experience and expertise advising national and international products manufacturers and commercial retailers on foreign, federal, state and NGO regulatory schemes and compliance governing a variety of consumer products – including alcohol and beverages, e-vapor products, cigars, cannabis and CBD. His litigation practice concentrates on complex matters stemming from product liability and toxic torts litigation. 

Franzoni earned his J.D. from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law and received his B.A. from the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated summa cum laude and was a Harry S. Truman and David L. Boren Scholar. Franzoni is also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served as part of the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Services in the Middle East and Europe.

Malik Havalic is a member of the firm’s Litigation department and Arbitration and Antitrust groups. He has worked on complex commercial disputes, with a focus on international commercial and investment arbitration.

Havalic has been engaged in AAA/ICDR, ICSID, ICC, SIAC, JAMS and PCJ arbitrations, and represented both sovereign and investor parties in treaty arbitration. He has experience with the oil and gas, nuclear energy, aerospace and defense, life science, pharmaceuticals, financial services and technology, and news media industries, among others.

Havalic received his B.A. from University of Michigan and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law.

Javad Husain is a member of the firm’s Corporate group.

Husain represents corporate and financial clients, as well as investors in connection with debt and equity offerings, mergers, de-SPACs, financings, restructurings, public company reporting and other corporate transactions, and advises on corporate governance issues and securities laws and regulations. Husain also represents private equity and hedge fund advisers in connection with fund launches, separately managed accounts, investments and restructurings. He also advises managers on investment company laws and regulations as well as day-to-day issues related to fund operations.

Husain received his B.A. in Economics from William and Mary and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
