Rare Reversal of Arbitration Award Confirmation from D.C. Circuit

Remy Gerbay, Malik Havalic and Mike DeBernardis convinced the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to vacate the lower court’s enforcement of an arbitration award rendered against the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

Two More Victories for SKAT

Marc Weinstein, Bill Maguire, Neil Oxford, Dustin Smith, John McGoey and Greg Farrell continued a streak of wins in Danish tax authority SKAT’s ongoing multi-district litigation, which stems from one of the biggest tax scandals in Europe.

In mid-September, the firm finalized a settlement with a U.S. defendant among those accused of participating in the tax fraud scheme, which cost SKAT $2.1 billion in fraudulent dividend withholding tax refunds.

Later that same month, the firm secured a $165 million victory for SKAT in a bench trial on competing claims of breach of a settlement agreement.

Asylum for Pro Bono Client from Togo

Working with Immigration Equality, Debbie Placid, with supervision by Meaghan Gragg, successfully secured asylum for a gay man from Togo, who came to the United States more than a decade ago to escape persecution. Greg Farrell also worked on the matter.
