October 30, 2017 – On Sunday, Oct. 29, Hughes Hubbard attorneys from the Miami office provided pro bono legal services and help to Holocaust survivors by preparing estate planning documents that included wills, health care advance directives, and durable powers of attorney. The event, organized by Parker Taylor, a partner in the firm’s Trusts & Estates practice, was part of an ongoing program of clinics for Holocaust survivors and was done in conjunction with Goodman Jewish Family Services in Broward County.
“As Holocaust survivors who were children and teenagers in the 1940s continue to get older, there is a serious need to help them assemble the critical legal documents they need to legally protect their estates and ensure their wishes will be carried out. Many do not have the resources to access these legal services or are not aware that they need these services. We are proud to provide a pro bono clinic of this kind,” Taylor said. “It is estimated that there are close to 130,000 Holocaust survivors in the U.S. and 30 percent are living at or below the poverty line – which is three times the poverty rate for most older Americans. These survivors have suffered greatly, and it is important that we do whatever we can to provide them with whatever assistance they need in their remaining years.”
Each survivor received an individual consultation at the clinic based on their particular needs.
