July 2, 2025 – The New York Law Journal (NYLJ) named Hughes Hubbard a finalist for Litigation Department of the Year: General Litigation in its 2025 New York Legal Awards.

The “Litigation Department of the Year” honor marks the second time Hughes Hubbard has been recognized by NYLJ in this category. We also congratulate our fellow shortlisted honorees Kirkland & Ellis, Sullivan & Cromwell, Quinn Emanuel, King & Spalding, Akin Gump, O’Melveny & Myers, Winston & Strawn and Boies Schiller.

NYLJ considered the firm’s recent litigation successes, which includes our landmark ~$500 million jury trial victory on behalf of the Danish Customs and Tax Administration, or Skatteforvaltningen (SKAT), in its sprawling U.S. litigation to recover $2.1 billion stolen in an international tax-refund scam; guiding cryptocurrency trading platform Gemini Trust Company to over $2.1 billion in recoveries in the bankruptcy of cryptocurrency lender Genesis Global Capital; and winning a dismissal of an action to recover one of Vincent van Gogh’s iconic Sunflowers paintings, plus $1.7 billion in damages, for Japan-based global insurance giant Sompo International Holdings.

"We're honored to be recognized for our legal prowess and the successful results achieved for our clients, including in resolving large, complex disputes in and out of the courtroom," said partner Dan Weiner, chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. “This recognition is a testament to the depth of our team and the strength, experience and skill of our litigators. I’m happy to see the NYLJ recognize our team’s year of innovative, groundbreaking legal work.”

The winners will be announced on Sept. 4 at the New York Legal Awards at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City. According to the NYLJ, the awards honor innovative lawyers, law firms and litigation departments that have influenced their practice areas in New York and beyond.
