January 27, 2020 – The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (GOARCH) announced today that George A. Tsougarakis, previously partner at Hughes Hubbard and a leading commercial litigator, has joined the Archdiocese as its general counsel and chief legal officer, effective immediately. He will remain of counsel to Hughes Hubbard as he assumes his responsibilities at the Archdiocese.

In his new role, Tsougarakis will advise the Archdiocese on the legal and regulatory issues it faces, and provide guidance to all its departments and ministries. He will report directly to His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and will work closely with the Archdiocese Council, Metropolises, Synod, Clergy Laity and all GOARCH departments, institutions and affiliated organizations.

“I’m thankful to my partners at Hughes Hubbard for the opportunity to work alongside some of the finest lawyers across the globe for over three decades,” he said. “For the next phase of my career, I have the rare opportunity as a lawyer to represent a client whose mission is personally very meaningful to me and one which I support entirely. I look forward to serving my faith and His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, for whom I have much respect and love.”

At Hughes Hubbard, Tsougarakis spent more than 33 years advising some of the largest companies in the world on a wide variety of complex legal issues.

“George has been a longtime member of our Hughes Hubbard family and we are grateful that he will remain so as he takes on this new role,” said Ted Mayer, chair of Hughes Hubbard. “He is an outstanding lawyer and leader, and we congratulate him on this important appointment.”
