Hughes Hubbard Among Winners in The American Lawyer’s Global Legal Awards

July 21, 2017 — Hughes Hubbard has been named among the winners of The American Lawyer’s 2017 Global Legal Awards for the firm’s work on the dispute surrounding the $7.3 billion bankruptcy liquidation of former telecommunications equipment giant Nortel Networks Corp.

Hughes Hubbard will be recognized, along with several other firms, as the winners of the “Global Dispute of the Year: Transnational Litigation” category of the Global Legal Awards during a dinner celebration on Sept. 25 at the Edison Ballroom in New York City. 

The American Lawyer announced on July 20 the finalists for the awards across four main categories: Citizenship, Disputes, Mergers and Acquisitions and Finance. The awards honor law firms that played a substantial role in matters that navigate complete international legal issues.

In June, Hughes Hubbard was also among the winners at ALM Media’s Transatlantic Legal Awards. At a ceremony in London, HHR was jointly awarded the Transatlantic Litigation Team of the Year, along with Herbert Smith Freehills, Debevoise & Plimpton, Lax O’Sullivan Lisus Gottlieb and Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg.

HHR represented Nortel’s European affiliates in a seven-year bankruptcy battle to determine how to divide $7.3 billion of bankruptcy liquidation assets among the group’s various estates around the world. The dispute culminated with an unprecedented cross-border simultaneous trial in Canada and the U.S. that lasted for seven weeks in 2014. The courts approved a global settlement in January.
