Hughes Hubbard has been recognized as a finalist for The National Law Journal’s 2026 Elite Trial Lawyer Awards in the Securities Litigation/Shareholder Rights category.
The firm was recognized for its work with the Customs and Tax Administration of the Kingdom of Denmark, or Skatteforvaltningen (SKAT), in its U.S. litigation efforts to recover $1 billion from a fraud scheme related to false refund claims for tax withheld from stock dividends.
In February 2025, a Hughes Hubbard team led by Marc Weinstein secured a sweeping victory for SKAT in a landmark jury trial that found the defendants – four individuals and their 17 pension plans, set up as vehicles to defraud the Danish government – liable for fraud, negligence and unjust enrichment, and awarded SKAT approximately $500 million in damages.
The firm also guided SKAT to a decisive $165 million bench-trial victory arising from competing claims over an alleged breach of a complex settlement agreement tied to the same fraud scheme in September 2025.
The National Law Journal’s Elite Trial Lawyer awards recognize U.S. law firms and attorneys for exceptional, innovative advocacy on behalf of plaintiffs, honoring groundbreaking strategies, significant results and a strong commitment to advancing justice.
