Hughes Hubbard Wins National Law Journal’s 2026 Elite Trial Lawyers Award for Securities Litigation

The National Law Journal has named Hughes Hubbard the 2026 winner of its Elite Trial Lawyers award in the Securities Litigation/Shareholder Rights category, recognizing the firm’s recent successes and significant results in high-stakes securities disputes.

Hughes Hubbard was acknowledged for its representation of the Customs and Tax Administration of the Kingdom of Denmark, or Skatteforvaltningen (SKAT), in its efforts to recover $1.1 billion stemming from a global fraud scheme involving false refund claims for tax withheld on stock dividends.

In February 2025, a Hughes Hubbard team secured a landmark jury verdict for SKAT, with a New York federal jury finding four individuals and 17 pension plans liable for fraud, negligence and unjust enrichment. The jury awarded SKAT approximately $500 million in damages.

The firm also secured a decisive $165 million bench-trial victory for SKAT in September 2025 in litigation involving competing claims over an alleged breach of a complex settlement agreement related to the same fraud scheme.

In addition to those courtroom successes, Hughes Hubbard has secured settlements exceeding $450 million on SKAT’s behalf. These results have been central to SKAT’s efforts to recover its losses.
