Firm's International Arbitration Group Named to Elite GAR 30 for Third Straight Year

April 20, 2018 — For the third year in a row, Hughes Hubbard has been recognized by Global Arbitration Review as one of the top 30 international arbitration firms in the world.

HHR's selection in the elite "GAR 30" appears in the 11th edition of GAR 100. The rankings were unveiled April 12 at the 8th annual GAR awards ceremony in Paris.

The GAR 30 is based primarily on the number of arbitral hearings conducted by a firm over a two-year period and also takes into account the number of arbitral appointments handled by firm members and the number of individuals who appear in Who's Who Legal: Arbitration.

In a profile of the firm, Canadian government trade adviser Colin Bird applauded Hughes Hubbard for its work on the softwood lumber disputes. The firm helped Canada prevail in an arbitration brought by the U.S. over alleged subsidies to Canadian softwood lumber exports.

Bird said the team "demonstrated an unparalleled command of the economics and context." He also praised John Townsend. "His ability to develop a rapport with the bench has no peer and he is a master at presenting complex economic evidence in a clear and compelling way," he said.

Another client praised the firm's "intelligence, tenacity and conviviality" in a multijurisdictional insurance dispute, adding that Townsend "knows international arbitration inside and out."
